What should I do if I’m experiencing a dental emergency?

The best thing you can do before you head to our practice is give our front office a quick call to describe the situation and let us know that you are on your way over. This allows our team to begin preparing for your arrival, and we may be able to offer some quick advice over the phone that can help you in the meantime. In rare cases, a patient will think that they’re experiencing an emergency, but their situation does not require immediate attention, and when this happens, we’d be glad to set up an appointment for you at a later date. If you need to speak with an emergency dentist in Fredericksburg, please call our office at 540-369-4939.

What is considered a dental emergency?

Certain situations are always considered dental emergencies. For example, a knocked-out tooth needs immediate assistance to save the tooth and reattach it. Some common dental emergencies that require urgent dental care include:

  • Cracked, Broken, or Dislodged Tooth
  • Severe Bleeding, Swelling, or Dental Trauma
  • Unbearable Tooth, Gum, or Mouth Pain
  • Lost Dental Restoration
  • Foreign Object Wedged Between Teeth
  • Gum Abscess

Should I go to the hospital or the dentist?

In stressful situations, it can be difficult to determine what to do and where to go. Some patients decide to go to an emergency room for a tooth, gum, or jaw-related issue when they should be making an emergency dentist appointment instead. Many times, the ER will only be able to offer some pain relief and a referral to an emergency dentist, unless you have more severe injuries that are not related to the teeth or mouth. If you are unsure what to do, you are welcome to contact our office so we can advise you on the best course of action to take.
