Signs You May Need a Dental Filling

A tooth with a white dental filling

A dental filling is a common treatment for cavities. For this restorative treatment, the compromised tooth material is removed, the area is cleaned, and the hole is filled with a special tooth-colored dental material. The filling seals your tooth and prevents the decay from spreading further. This will decrease your pain and preserve your ability to use your natural tooth.

While Dr. Bailey and our team will examine your teeth for cavities during your routine visits to our office, we want to share some of the warning signs that you may need a dental filling.

You Have a Toothache

While not all tooth pain is caused by tooth decay, a toothache is still a sign that something is wrong. To be on the safe side, we recommend coming into our office if you’re experiencing tooth pain. One common cause of toothaches is when infection has spread to the pulp inside the tooth. In that case, root canal therapy may be necessary. Coming to our office as soon as possible after your pain begins for early treatment may help you avoid more complex treatment.

Your Dental Filling Is Loose or Falls Out

If you lose a dental filling, call us right away. A lost filling weakens your tooth and makes it more susceptible to breakage. If not replaced as soon as possible, it can also increase your risk for developing an infection.

Your Tooth Is Cracked or Chipped

Dental fillings are a versatile treatment. Sometimes, we can treat a small crack or chip in the tooth with a dental filling. If you crack or chip a tooth, come and see us as soon as you can to prevent further damage.

North River Dental Care offers a variety of restorative treatment options to improve the appearance and function of damaged teeth. To ask our team any questions about dental fillings or to schedule an appointment at our office, contact us today!
