How to Maintain a Dental Bridge

There are several options to restore missing teeth. A dental bridge can be a great solution to replace missing teeth!

A dental bridge often consists of two dental crowns placed on the natural teeth surrounding a gap with an artificial tooth in the middle of these crowns. It can also be secured to only one crown, to dental implants, or with metal attachments to natural teeth.

Dental bridges are fairly simple to clean and can last 10 or more years. However, this long lifespan is only possible if a patient properly cares for their dental bridge and the underlying gums. Here are some tips to help you maintain your dental bridge:

Do Not Chew Non-Food Items

While dental bridges are sturdy and durable, they can fracture with excessive force and overuse. This is also the case with natural teeth. Certain poor habits can place your dental bridge at risk of damage. These can include chewing on ice, pens, and pencils; opening bottles and packages with your teeth; and grinding your teeth at night without a nightguard.

Brush & Floss Daily

While a dental bridge is a prosthetic oral appliance that cannot decay, your natural teeth and gums still require daily cleaning! Take the time to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, to floss your teeth, to brush your tongue, and to clean around your dental bridge. These oral hygiene habits will help prevent tooth decay of the teeth under your crowns and your other remaining natural teeth, gum disease, and bad breath.

Attend Routine Cleanings

A dental bridge in optimal shape can help you enjoy total oral function and significantly contribute to your overall quality of life!
