Taking care of your smile at home is just as important as your biannual dental checkups and cleanings. In addition to daily brushing and flossing, occasionally rinsing with a mixture of water and salt can be beneficial for your oral health.

Can Saltwater Rinses Help Heal Oral Health Issues?

A saltwater rinse is a natural, affordable alternative to mouthwash. Rinsing your mouth with homemade saltwater can help:

  • Inhibit accumulation of harmful bacteria & dental plaque
  • Lessen discomfort from canker sores & a scratchy throat
  • Calm inflammation & infection
  • Balance pH Levels
  • Reduce bad breath
  • Cleanse extraction sites

How to Make a Saltwater Rinse

To do a saltwater rinse, you’ll need a cup of warm water. The water should be warm enough to dissolve the salt but not hot enough to burn your mouth. Stir 1 tablespoon of salt into the warm water. Take a large sip of the salt water, swish it around in your mouth, and gargle. Spit out the salt water and repeat as needed.
