What is a Crown?dental crowns

A crown, sometimes called a cap, is a restoration that covers and protects your entire tooth. Crowns can improve your tooth’s appearance, but are most often used to repair substantial damage caused by cavities, old fillings, grinding and other forces. Crowns can be designed to blend in with your natural teeth giving you back a beautiful, healthy smile. Crowns can also work hand in hand with dental implants. Implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium that are placed where a tooth is missing. A crown is attached to the top of an implant to give you a brand new tooth.

Fitting Your Crown

Dr. Bailey goes to great lengths to ensure the quality of your crown. Everyone’s mouth is unique and Dr Bailey gives our dental lab detailed instructions on how to design and custom-make a crown just for you! Finally, before bonding the crown to your tooth, Dr. Bailey subjects your crown to a strict quality-control checklist to make sure that it fits well, functions properly, and looks great.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, dental crowns last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. However, it is not unusual for a dental crown to last 25 to 30 years or longer, especially if the wear and tear on it is kept to a minimum. We recommend patients avoid using their dental restorations to chew particularly hard things, like ice or hard candy. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom nightguard can help protect your crown and the rest of your teeth from being damaged.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

A dental crown procedure is less invasive and requires far less recovery time in comparison to dental implants. There are also many ways dental crowns can be utilized to restore teeth that have been affected by decay and trauma. Dental crowns can be used to:

  • Restore teeth to their original size, shape, and color
  • Strengthen and protect damaged teeth
  • Support teeth that have large fillings
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Enhance the cosmetic appearance of a tooth

How much do dental crowns cost?

The average cost of a dental crown varies depending on many different factors, so the best way to determine the cost of your crown is by scheduling a consultation with our team. Most insurance plans will cover at least part of your total dental crown cost, and we also accept flexible payment plans through United Medical Credit and CareCredit®. For patients without insurance, you may want to enroll in our in-house North River Advantage Plan, which offers discounts on restorative treatments like dental crowns. For more information, please reach out to our front office or visit our financial page.

Can dental crowns be whitened?

Dental crowns cannot be whitened with over-the-counter whitening products or professional teeth whitening treatments. The good news is, dental crowns tend to be more resistant to staining than natural teeth, so as long as you take care of your crown, it should remain roughly the same color. Some patients like to whiten their teeth before receiving restorations like crowns so that their teeth and dental restorations will be consistently white and even in color.

Should I get a dental crown or a dental bridge?

Dental crowns and dental bridges can be used for many of the same reasons, including restoring the appearance of teeth and protecting them from future damage. In cases where a single tooth needs to be treated, most dentists recommend going with a dental crown, as it doesn't require any healthy teeth nearby to be modified. If you have a few teeth in a row that need to be covered by a restoration, or you have a missing tooth, that's when it's more likely that a bridge would be used.
